Hello? hello?...hello? (echo) *cricket!

Hey MN BFL friends! I hope this finds each and every one of you doing
absolutely fantastic!

Summer is on it's way! (My brain pretty much skips spring and jumps
to anticipating summer.) Lot's of awesome outdoor opportunities
coming our way to enjoy a change of environment, a change of pace, a
new group or seasonal group and destruction of the monotonous indoor
delimma. Cool!

Workouts have been going well as I continue to heal from my plantar
fasciitis and shin splints. Key component into making that occur: 2
pairs of new, quality running shoes that I alternate. Ah, relief! My
left leg shin splint is hanging in there so may have a pronation
issue going on that needs to be addressed specifically soon.

Workout today: Hill Runs
The mighty hills of doom, destruction and humiliation. Yep, those are
the ones. 10 two minute hills with a one minute interval "flat".
Warm up 10 minute and cool down 10 minute "easy" run. (Easy and run
are not found as co-inhabitants in my vocabulary but...okay...)

How's everyone??
Ben- How are you feeling and where are you at with your treatments?
Cindy- How is life and has it settled down into a manageable daily
chaos? ;-)
Steve- How goes our powerhouse? What's the latest and greatest in
your continuous adventure of discovery?
Kristen- How's our marathon maniac??
John- How is the challenge going for you and your wife?
Rebecca- How is tri training?
Beth- You there, lady?
Everyone else- how are you? Check in please!

Have a great day and enjoy the fact that the grass is turning green
on OUR side of the fence!

Bon,
The powerhouse ran out of gas the past two weeks. Between SAD, job situation and
school, things have been pretty tough psychologically for me the last couple of
weeks. I missed about a week's worth of workouts and my diet slipped. I didn't
do a lot to prevent it because I just felt like taking a mental and physical
break for a little bit. I'm not worried about it and I'm not going to beat
myself up over it either. These things happen occasionally and I know what I
need to do to get back into the swing of things.

I'm glad to hear that your foot ailments are beginning to dissipate. It's
amazing what a new pair of shoes can do! To prevent shin splints I run on the
grass or dirt paths around the lakes as much as possible. The more I can stay
off of asphalt and concrete, the better. I also do a lot of ankle twirls before
and after I run which helps to prevent tissue inflammation of the shin area.

Steve

Powerhouse Steve,

Even the most effective, massive furnaces shut down for maintenance
now and then. I have a feeling you'll be out of the shoots in no time
flat. Get thee to a tanning bed! Seriously- sorry to hear there have
been some challenges as of late. Hopefully those things will either
come together in a nice way or your mental, physical and
psychological strength will increase so that you can re-gain your
focus and forge ahead.

What is your favorite cardio these days? I haven't got my bike yet
but am hoping to soon.... Looking forward to taking on the lakes!
Running around them anyways. I'm terrified of my first open water
swim. Gotta get my Will worked out soon. I also prefer the grass or
dirt by far over asphalt or concrete, though I am finding the ground
hasn't settled yet so the bumps and holes are best avoided right now.

Get your groove back!

Hi Bonnie,

I'm so glad you sent this email. I was just thinking about all of you
(particularly Rebecca who I still want to assist with swimming! Things have been
so hectic...and not my best friend's wedding is taking over my life for the next
month!)

The marathon training is going ok. My sister and I and her roommate ran in the
SLC Half Marathon April 19th and had a blast. It was challenging and we ran
faster then I normally do but we pr's by 6 minutes and finished in 2:09:29! I
could definately tell we were at a higher elevation as I got tired much faster.
And a lot of the course was downhill so my shins were screaming for a week
after. I need to work on downhill running!

I'll post photos in a bit.

I've only run once since the HM, 8 miles last weekend which felt great. And
this week I've been holding off since I had a fungal toenail removed on Tuesday.
I'm shooting for 16 miles tomorrow in the rain and cold so wish me luck!

My sister and I are both signed up for Grandma's Marathon in June, and then
Twin Cities in October, and after that I think it's time for a break from full
marathons....or at least just one a year-two is a lot!!

My weight hasn't changed much which is a bit frusterating, but I'm going to
focus more on my diet which has been sliding, especially with lots of
celebrations coming up. I have an awesome aqua silk dress I am wearing to many
of the events and it fits like a glove and a black bridesmaid dress I need to
wear next weekend so that is my motivation.

On the fitness front, I am really focusing on my new mantra" focus on what you
CAN do, not on what you CAN"T." And my new favorite" the reason most people fail
to succeed is because they trade what they want most for what they want in the
moment."

I am starting a new weight training plan, the Power of 10- super slow lifting
on Monday. After doing 4 months of New Rules of Lifting for Women I am much
stronger and ready for a change and new challenge.

I also can't stop talking about how much doing my pilates tapes has benefited
me now that I am consistently doing them 2-3 times a week. My thighs are
actually getting smaller and more defined!!

Rebecca-Let's email some more to try to find a time to get together for
swimming. Sorry I haven't gotten back to you, I've literally had NO time.

Have a great day and where is the sun!?

Love the photos, Kerstin!!

Looks like you three ladies enjoyed your marathon! Though at that
pace, I don't think I would be smiling! Awesome job!!
It's funny to see everyone looking over at you guys- admiring the fun
you're having, no doubt! *Loved the cat pictures too!
Good luck tomorrow! You are one dedicated lady. I spoiled myself and
ran indoors today. *smiles sheepishly

I'm sure you'll look glamorous in your dresses as you did in the blue
one in the pictures!

Love your new mantras, especially the one about the trade off!

Sounds like you're doing all the right moves- shaking things up a
bit. I've heard nothing but great things about Pilates!

Keep us posted!

I've been doing pretty well. Getting back into a more regular exercise routine
again. We joined the YMCA (only club near us).
Last week, Stacey and I went on a trip to Puerto Vallarta to celebrate our 10th
anniversary, escape MN, and recouperate after the last seven months of brain
tumor fun.
Here are some of our pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ursel/

This week I'm back on chemotherapy. This week's gone remarkable well so far. I
think it was the whole laying around and doing nothing in Mexico for a week that
helped me get rested. I did sprain my knee though (hit by a big wave).

With the exception of the last couple weeks, and the previous chemo cycle, I've
still been working out 3-4 times a week. My new favorite cardio is the
elliptical machine. Now that we have a gym membership, I can do other cardio
than the bike.

I'm still dealing with a rotator cuff problem (siezure related) that inhibits my
UBWO, and now I've got the knee problem, but I think I'll be back at it early
next week.

Bon,
The powerhouse ran out of gas the past two weeks. Between SAD, job situation and
school, things have been pretty tough psychologically for me the last couple of
weeks. I missed about a week's worth of workouts and my diet slipped. I didn't
do a lot to prevent it because I just felt like taking a mental and physical

I'm glad to hear that your foot ailments are beginning to dissipate. It's
amazing what a new pair of shoes can do! To prevent shin splints I run on the
grass or dirt paths around the lakes as much as possible. The more I can stay
off of asphalt and concrete, the better. I also do a lot of ankle twirls before
and after I run which helps to prevent tissue inflammation of the shin area.

Ben,

If you're going to go and sprain your knee, that is certainly one of
the better ways of doing it! I must say, I have never heard of being
injured by being hit by a wave but considering the weight of a wave,
the velocity, the sheer volume and so forth, there must be a lot more
injuries out there!

Happy Anniversary to you and Stacey!!

I'm so glad to hear you are having a good week so far with regards to
chemo.
I bet being able to do the elliptical is a very refreshing
alternative to your cardio!

I hope you have a great weekend and the effects of your Mexico get
away are still lingering! (Minus the sprain.)

the better. I also do a lot of ankle twirls before and after I run
which helps to prevent tissue inflammation of the shin area.

I have been having major problems trying to respond to everyone's e-

replies came back to me as undeliverable. It said something about
using plain text only? I don't know what that means. Then I came to
our yahoo website to reply and typed out EVERYTHING and as soon as I
hit preview, it all erased!!! I don't know why I'm having such
problems but this is the last time I'm going to try and then I will
take the hint that maybe it's just not supposed to happen.

Bon: Glad to hear you're healing up! Thanks for checking in with all
of us! It seems that life gets so busy. It's hard to find the time
to check in.
My tri training has been going well. I have been making great
progress on all events. I am under a 10-minute mile now and I'm sure
I will only continue to get better. On the swimming front, I am now
rotary breathing on my left side too. I'm doing much better with my
form. I am going to try to get out my bike very soon! Spin class is
fun and I am improving with that as well but it would be nice to ride
outside.
In the past 16-weeks I have lost 30lbs. and removed 38.5-inches so I
continue to make progress on the weight reduction. I miss my weight
training. I may just do this triathlon in June and the Iron Girl
duathlon in September. Training for a triathlon is alot of work and
it really does take alot out of a person. I'm actually taking a day
off of work just to get caught up with some stuff around the house.
I am probably going back to bed first!
As soon as you get your bike, we have to plan a ride! I hope you
have a GREAT day!

Steve: It's good to hear from you! I'm sorry to hear you are
struggling with the SAD! I know exactly how you feel. I have had
many bouts with that, for some reason it hasn't been too bad for me
this year. We've got some sunny days ahead so hopefully you will get
to feeling better soon.
We all have our moments of falling of the nutrition/workout train. I
had almost a year off the train. Sometimes it just seems
overwhelming. It's good you know what you need to do to hop back
train again! You'll do it too!
I hope we can all plan a bike ride soon! Is the trail from Hopkins
to Chaska a trail that you can ride a road bike on? Or do you need a
mountain bike? I would like to try that ride but wasn't too sure if
you needed a special bike. Take care, Stevo!

Kerstin: Congratulations on finishing your half marathon and in such
GREAT time! Thank you for sharing your pictures! I think you look
wonderful in your dress! VERY ELIGANT!
My swimming is coming along pretty good! I might take a video and e-
mail it to you and maybe you could look at it and give me some
special tips. I appreciate your expertise and any tips you have to
offer.
Are you still planning on doing the Iron Girl? Are there any spots
open on your team? I am going to do that if I can find a team to
join.
Good luck on your new weight training! Let us know how you progress!

Ben: Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful pictures! I hope I
can travel somewhere like that someday! It looks like you had a
GREAT time despite the big wave incident! I continue to pray for
healing for you! Stay strong!

I hope that EVERYONE is having a GREAT week! I hope we can all get

Hello Everyone,

Sounds like everyone is really busy.me to but would love to see everyone for
a get together some time soon. Unfortunately May is out for me as well as
the first half of June. How about July of 2028? Just Kidding! I'm out here
by Lake Minnetonka so I was thinking maybe a Luce Line ride followed by swim
in the Lake. I can't believe I'm already trying to plan things for
June.where did April go?

Since I signed up to do the sprint Tri, my body seems to be falling apart. I
don't know what's going on but I'm going to see an orthopedic doc of Fri. I
hope he has SOMETHING to offer. I hate not having a resolution when I go to
the doc.

Take care.have a great day,

Hello Group!

So, has anyone tried or know anything about the NO2 / NOS (Nitric Oxide
Generator) products? I had thought about trying it at one time but they are
very pricey and then I got an email from
http://www.mri-performance.com/index.html whose marketing is awesome and of
course, their products sound amazing. Just curious if anyone had tried
these?

Jenn,
I bumped up a posting for you on this subject from a few months ago. It's now
been 3 months since I first tried the product so I'll add a few comments based
on my experiences.

I tried No Xplode by BSN. Basically, it contains three ingredients: L-Arginine
( http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/herbsvitaminsad/a/Arginine.htm ) which acts as
the vasodilator, caffeine which acts as the energy booster, and creatine which
acts as the muscle volumizer and restorer of ADP. A long posting could be
written on each of these ingredients and their benefits and limitations. I
suspect the NO2 product you are investigating has similar ingredients.

Basically, NO2 products dilate the blood vessels to increase blood flow to the
muscles. The alleged benefit is that muscles will receive more oxygen and
nutrients thus providing more muscle growth. Personally, I noticed a 10 percent
gain in all my lifts on this last challenge using a NO2. Now, I may have been
able to get the same results just by taking a caffeine supplement for the
additional energy boost. I think I'm going to try that next time around. The
downside of using an NO2 is a dramatic drop in blood pressure. Because your
blood vessels are dilated (larger) that means the same amount of blood is
flowing through larger passageways and doesn't need to get pumped as hard by the
heart to get to its destination. Hence, low blood pressure.

After several weeks of experimentation, I cut my dosage back by 25% on my upper
body days and 50% on lower body days. The reason is that because on the lower
body days and the amount of weight I was trying to lift required great effort
and heavy breathing. I would get very light headed after each set and had to be
careful about standing up too fast.

If you already have low or high blood pressure, are taking blood pressure
medication, or have any heart condition, you should not take NO2. Also, if you
are pregnant, have diabetes, have liver or kidney problems you should not take
NO2. Check and follow all labels warnings. Do your own research online to make
sure this product is safe for you. If you are taking ANY medications check with
your doctor and/or pharmicist for possible drug interactions.

Rebecca,
With all the weight and inches you are losing, I may not recognize you!

The two trails starting in Hopkins are hard packed limestone. You can ride a
road bike on them without too much problem. You'll just need to be extra alert
steering around the occasional dip or loose gravel, etc. Last weekend I went for
a 45 mile ride through Minneapolis and St. Paul. I sure felt it the next day!

Rebecca-

Sorry to hear about the email issues. That can be so frustrating!

So glad to hear about your continual improvements!! You are tearing
this up!! Outstanding!! That is wonderful you can breath on both
sides. I have not had any improvements on that front and frankly if I
turn my head at all to the right my ear immediately fills up with an
exorbiant amount of water.

I understand regard the heavy training load. It is a killer!
Here's to us both getting some much needed rest and recovery.

Hi Jen!

Sorry to hear your bod is rebelling against the training- falling
apart! My feet and now my right knee are very angry at me and trying
to tell me I am 40 years old but my heart is saying I am about...31?

I hope you have success at the orth tomorrow. Let us know how it
goes.

I heard that Lake Minnetonka is a great place to practise the swims.
Do you have a wet suit?

Steve,

You'll still be able to recognize me. I still have 11-pounds to lose
just to get back to where I was last time I saw you. Maybe in about
another 6-months I will be unrecognizable.

Thanks for the information on the trail ride. That's awesome that
you got a 45-mile bike ride in! WOW! Good for you! I bet that
helped your mood quite a bit!
I hope you have a great weekend!

can ride a road bike on them without too much problem. You'll just
need to be extra alert steering around the occasional dip or loose
gravel, etc. Last weekend I went for a 45 mile ride through
Minneapolis and St. Paul. I sure felt it the next day!

B: Thanks for you! I sure don't feel like I'm tearing it up. I had
a day off on Wednesday because I couldn't get my eyes open that
morning but I did get my strength training in yesterday before my 1-
hour spin class (1-hour of sprints!) and today I managed to get my 3-
mile run in (9:20-minute mile) and my 1/2-mile swim! Yea-I guess I
am tearing it up! My appetite is voracious! It does help to eat
lots of complex carbs though.

I have a feeling you'll be improving on your swim soon. You are
stronger on long distance swims, I have to work on that!

I hope you have a GREAT weekend!

Hi Bonnie,

Actually I wanted to say Hey, BonBon. Does anyone call you that because if
you were a good friend I would have to call you BonBon? OK, maybe I've been
hanging out with my 5 year old too much!

I think there are parts of Lake Minnetonka that could be great to swim but
on busy boat weekends it would be a little harder to find. I do not have a
wetsuit, I usually just wait for the water to warm up but since I'm doing
the sprint this year I may not be able to wait that long. The water last
weekend was 44 degrees!!!

Jen

Hey Cindy! I hope you had a GREAT weekend. Sorry I didn't call you
after my bike ride on Saturday. It was a crazy busy weekend. I had
a GREAT ride though. I went up Bush Lake Road, as you know it has
been calling my name since I got my bike. It was quite a challenge.
I ended up going up twice though-the first time was a little bit
tougher than the second time. I thought my lungs were going to
explode by the time I got to the top. My heart rate was 160 bpm the
first time and 155 bpm the second time. It was awesome so much so I
contemplated going up a third time but I just had too much to do this
weekend so I'll have to go another day. I did take a nasty spill on
my bike, while sitting at the stop light. I was unclipped on my
right foot resting at the curb and I shifted my weight ever so
slightly and over I went. Lots of blood and bruises on that fall.
It's ok though nothing serious. It's definately a lot safer in spin
class, not as much fun though. I ended up riding 16.45 miles it took
me about an hour and fifteen minutes. I was supposed to do a two
hour ride but with the two hill climbs, I figured I got my workout in
for the day!

I hope your job search will reap some successful results this week!!

Take CARE!

Cindy, I'm glad you were able to get some job search stuff
accomplished. I just KNOW you are going to find the job of your
dreams!!

I've recovered from my fall, now if I could just the energy to get up
in the morning to workout. I have not been able to get out of bed
the past couple of days. This is my rest and recovery week so I'm
going to NOT beat myself up and rest and recover.

Tomorrow my plan is to take my bike over to Bush Lake Road and go up
the hill and down the hill, up the hill then down the hill! I'm not
sure how many times yet but that's the plan.

Friday, I have to practice transitions. Easy work-outs but I have to
do all three events so that I can practice transitioning.

Saturday, I was planning on going out to Excelsior to ride the course
and then run the course that is mapped out for my triathlon. If you
would like to join me you sure are welcome to. I want to try to be
out there by 8:30am so just let me know, if you want to go. I have a
bike rack, I could come pick you up and we can drive out and have a
GREAT workout together.

Have a GREAT day!

~Rebecca

Rebecca,
I'd love to go biking on Saturday but I'm donating blood that morning and they
recommend no strenuous exercise the day of a donation. I'll drink a Myoplex in
your honor instead.
